Count Ability

Without the ability to reliably count forwards and backwards and recognise and write numbers, students are unable to progress in more complex mathematical skills and are destined to fall further and further behind as time goes on. The Count Ability Intervention program is designed as a short block, once a day intervention with students who have not yet mastered these skills.

What is included

  • Manual
  • Activity Cards
  • Student Recording Book and Completion Certificate

Learning goals

  • Count forward and backward from any number in the range 1-30
  • Name the number before and after any given number in the range of 1-30

Suggested use

The Intervention is highly structured and fully scripted, so it does not rely on extensive teacher knowledge and input and can be implemented by support staff or even volunteers. The program is broken into 4 sections, each of which address a skill set within Aspect 1 of the Numeracy Continuum. Section 1, for example, helps students to master counting forwards to and backwards from 10, recognising the numbers out of sequence, identifying the number before and the number after, and writing the numbers. Sections 2, 3 and 4 extend those skills until students no longer need to count from one and then into larger numbers.

Students are assessed prior to starting the program and only complete the sections they need to complete.

Each skill is broken down into a lesson, which is then laid out step by step. Tutors read and explain each step for the student to practice, then record if the student reached mastery at each step. Students do not move forward onto the next lesson until they have mastered the first one. Each lesson takes 10 -15 minutes so students remain engaged and concentrating, and return to class quickly and with minimal disruption.

The lessons use numeral cards, 10 frames, counters and activities in a booklet that have been designed to support the development of student understanding of each step.

The intervention kit includes:

  • the complete Manual
  • the Student Recording Booklet
  • the Activity Cards
  • A certificate of completion to give to students.

It is extremely effective and students enjoy their learning, and completion of the program is a great confidence boost!
